Generate additional motion blur from footage motion or custom direction.

Get it

Download on GitHub
  1. Download the aeTools repository from GitHub as a ZIP, or clone it. One download brings every tool.
  2. Copy the Aitor_Echeveste folder into your .nuke folder.
  3. Add nuke.pluginAddPath("./Aitor_Echeveste") to .nuke/init.py and restart Nuke.

In the gizmo

  • Motion estimation from footage
  • Vector-based motion blur
  • Custom directional motion
  • Maskable blur

A sharp patch moving over a blurred plate gives the composite away, even when the track is perfect. Motion blur is light collected while the shutter is open, and adding it after the fact means knowing, or estimating, how things moved.

A frame is not an instant

A camera records everything that happens while its shutter is open. A moving point becomes a streak whose direction and length come from its motion and the exposure time. An ordinary blur softens in every direction, which is why it never looks like motion.

Motion from the footage, or motion you define

In footage mode, aeMotionBlur estimates motion vectors from the image with Nuke's VectorGenerator and blurs along them. In custom mode you define the direction and amount yourself, which is cleaner when you already know how the element moves. Both have amount, falloff, shutter offset and mix controls.

Why edges double

Where a foreground passes over a background, the motion of one shouldn't smear across the other. Estimated vectors are least reliable exactly there, at occlusions and edges, so ghosting is the usual failure. Isolating the moving element helps; nothing removes the problem completely.

Reach for it

  • Moving patches and retimed or warped elements
  • Matching added elements to the plate's motion blur

Think twice

  • There's no usable motion in the image to estimate
  • Several overlapping layers each need different motion
